Skirts have been a part of men's wardrobes since the Roman Empire created the first skirts. Until the Roman Empire the word skirt referred to what we call today a hem. A hem is defined by Houghton Mifflin as, "An edge or border on a piece of cloth, especially a finished edge, as for a garment or curtain, made by folding an edge under and stitching it down."
The Roman military designed a chainmail dress for war, but the dress was too heavy. They broke the dress into two pieces, but the full length skirt was still too heavy. They then created the first armoured mini-skirt.

Men wore skirts regularly for the next two thousand years, until the 1900s when western civilization made men believe that most skirts are only for women. The Celtic societies within western civilization kept their skirts. These skirts are called Kilts. Kilts survived in part because they include the family colours called a Tartan.
Today, many men are expanding their wardrobes with solid coloured Kilts. Many men feel safer wearing a Kilt since they are already accepted as men's clothing.
Not all men are limiting themselves to the Kilt. Skirts are fun and men are discovering just how great they are. There are so many choices in skirts and men are learning about them all.
