Having worn tights under my jeans for many winters now, the reason was they are thinner than long johns and IMHO (In My Humble Opinion) more comfortable.
Also I spend much of my days going from heated offices to wind swept quarries, I needed to find a compromise between "thermals and normals", So I tried tights or as you ex colonials call them, " pantyhose".
I bought all types, styles,colours etc.
Some were VERY uncomfortable, some caused itching, some gussets reach my knees.
In the end, I discovered that you only get what you pay for, if you get something cheap and it fits, then thats a bonus, generally I find that isn't the case.
I quite accept that some guys would never wear tights, come hell or high water, but then that applies to Kilts or Skirts, each to their own.
