Ring of Confidence 06-24-2004 06:41 PM
The confidence to wear a skirt seems to be aquired over a period of time. For me it has taken around 18 months to move from being a 'secret' skirt wearer to this week wearing my mid calf length black denim skirt to work (Civil Service Dept) and to various meetings.
At first my heart used to hammer away with nerves when i wore a skirt in public and I think I rather thought that some form of authority would turn on me at any moment and take me to task. But that feeling passes as you learn that as well as any adverse reaction there is plenty of support, even if it is unspoken, you learn to read in other people's eyes and body language that they are saying 'good for you, be yourself and go for it'.
A year ago I used to be very nervous of looking at skirts in shops, I thought someone would probably throw me out at any moment, but they don't. You are quite OK to go skirt shopping in the high street. After all there are often ladies in the men's section buying clothes for their partners.
I do a lot of train travel for work and for me wearing skirts whilst travelling by train was how i built up confidence. I am in my 50's so I guess that after 50 years a'trousering it is not surprising if it took a little while to get used to going skirted. But now, for me, the main thing holding me back is my wife and younger daughter and their concerns.
