We all got an email from HR today stating what acceptable clothing was, and wasn't. Some things make sense; no offensive logos, torn clothing, short-shorts, belly shirts, etc... Also mentioned was flip-flops, and 'beach shoes', whatever those are. I wear sandles. Not sure if those are in this unacceptable realm of footwear. I asked if shorts were ok (since only short-shorts were mentioned) but was told no.

A while ago I was consulting somewhere, and HR sent a similar note to everyone. The men were pretty pissed (it was summer, and people liked wearing shorts and sandles). Women can wear open-toed shoes, and mini-skirts.. but men have to wear shoes and long pants. So, men started wearing mini-skirts and womens open-toed shoes in protest. Of course, HR wasn't very amused. But, the ACLU said that if women can wear it, men can too. So, HR changed the policy to allow men to wear shorts and sandles during the summer months. I guess they would rather have men wearing shorts than skirts.

I know people here wouldn't wear skirts in protest, but it would likely be effective. Maybe kilts would do. I really wish we could wear shorts, it is hot as hell here. That's the reason I wear sandles. They aren't only comfortable, but help keep me cool... since it is usually too hot in here for me.

In college a prof kicked me out of class because I wouldn't remove my hat. I looked at the school codes, and saw nothing about hats in class. Also, it was a public school, not private. I called the ACLU, and they said that they couldn't make me not wear a hat, and couldn't kick me out of class. ACLU called the school, school called me... I went back to class with my hat on.
