My Wife's Acceptance 03-08-2004 12:00 PM
When I first told my wife that I wanted to wear a skirt, she was not pleased. I explained to her that men have worn some version of a skirt or dress throughout history and that pants have only been prevalent for the last four hundred years. I told her that men began wearing pants in order to ride on horses and eventually adopted them as everyday wear.
She listened to me, but told me that she was not raised with men wearing skirts. I explained to her that her upbringing comes from recent history and is not how it has always been. She needed time to get used to the idea.
We went to the Bravehearts: Men in Skirts exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and she read the same statements that I had told her. She began to change her mind and to see that it was not such an odd idea.
She agreed to participate in the Million Skirted Men march this past February 7th, 2004. We had a great time and ever since then she has been getting more comfortable with me in a skirt.
