Human Norms 03-19-2004 12:25 PM
I had a discussion with a woman last night who has difficulty accepting me as a man in a skirt. She said to me, "Why do you wear a skirt? Why do you need to do so?"
I replied, "For the same reason that you need to wear pants." I then went on to explain to her that Roman men wore the first short skirts and stockings. I told her that these events took place well before women ever wore short skirts or stockings.
She said to me that today it is not the norm for a man to wear a skirt. "I do not expect to see a man in a skirt today", she said.
I told her, "If a man cannot wear a skirt, then I say that a woman cannot wear pants."
She grimaced and had no rebuff.
I told her that this is the same norm that was broken by women in pants and that the norm is what needs to be abolished.
She said, "I have no argument for that."
I asked her what she meant.
She said that she cannot argue with that line of reasoning. She described my argument as rational and undeniable. She ended the conversation by saying that she has to deal with her own issues and that she does not judge me negatively as a person for wearing a skirt. She just doesn't know how to accept it and overcome her current norms.
