Gender Roles
The gender roles of men and women have been shaped by society. Men have been expected to hold the role of head of household, security guard and bread winner for thousands of years. Women have been expected to take care of the household, to give birth to and care for children and obey their husbands.
These gender roles were disrupted in the 1800s when women started to rebel against the societal norms. Women continued this rebellion through the 1900s and gained a great deal of equality with men.
The current gender role for women is no longer as clear as it appears to be for men. The gender role for men is no longer valid now that so many women are working. Many men have continued to attempt to conform to the understood male gender role.

Men are now trying to understand what it means to be male. Many men are exploring new styles and bringing back fashion to men. These men see their gender role as being much more broad than the societal norms of the 1900s.
The male gender role shrank during the 1900s to a very small understanding of masculinity. Machismo became the standard for men. The role of men in society became defined clearly while the role of women became much less clear.
Men lost all of their fashion sense and became increasingly more violent. Two world wars were fought during the 1900s and men reduced their wardrobes to minimal dark coloured items of clothing.
Gender roles are being redefined today and how they will exist in a year or even ten is yet unknown. The best thing about these changes is that they allow men to redefine themselves.
The best definition of gender roles would be and should be that no definitions should apply. Men and women should develop as individuals rather than into defined roles. Individuals developed without defined roles will be happier and more natural.
