Male Gender
Men have ruled the Earth for thousands of years. Men controled society from Kings down to husbands. Women and children belonged to men in the same way that we often view pets today. There was no higher authority than men.
"A man's home is his castle" has often been stated. This reflects the power that a man wielded in his house. This power was the ultimate rule in a house.
The power of men has greatly diminished in many societies and is fading in others today. Men still dominate in positions of authority, but no longer control every position of authority.
Men have lost their authority in the home as well. It used to be considered acceptable for a man to hit a woman to keep her under control. The term rule of thumb is believed to come from the idea that it was acceptable to hit a woman with a stick that was no wider than your thumb.
Today, if a man hits a woman he is put in jail in many societies. There are still a few cultures that allow men to control women with violence. This loss of control after thousands of years is causing higher extreme domestic violence crimes.

Men try to control women without using violent methods, but they find that this is difficult to do and they end up resorting to violence. This is not true of all men, but it is on ongoing issue within society.
Women are not expecting to be controled today in the way that they understood and expected for thousands of years. Wedding vows are increasingly excluding the terms "to honor and obey". Women are acting as equals in the home and gaining greater equality in society every year. The female gender roles are no longer accurate or enforceable.
The problem here is that the perceived gender role for men has not changed. Men are still attempting to maintain the same gender role that they have held for thousands of years.
The issue becomes prominent when women do not follow the old standards but men do. A woman who expects equality is not going to tolerate a dominant male. Males can no longer expect to dominate women, nor can they consider their children as property.
Men are not sure what their current gender role is in society. Many men are attempting to redefine their gender role, while other men are trying to hold on to the old traditional role.
Men must adapt to a new gender role in order for the survival of the human race. Men need women and vice versa. Without the ability to adapt to changing gender roles men the human race will ultimately fail.
