Accepting Change

Previous  Back  Next

Change is difficult for most people. Change is frightening for most people. It is much more comfortable to hold the standards that are currently understand then to accept change.

The fear of the unkown prevents individuals from feeling comfortable with change. Individuals become comfortable with the current situation and even if that situation is not good, the individual knows what to expect. Not knowning what to expect is much more frightening than accepting the current situation.

Masculinity is changing slowly and with some pains. There are many companies and individuals that are fighting that change. Corporations are afraid to market to men who see masculinity as less macho. The press finds it easier to write articles that support machismo.

News! News! News!

Corporations are afraid that the corporate image might be tarnished for some by marketing to the new men. The belief in fearce competition is driving this fear. The truth is that companies can and should market to all of the consumers. There is nothing negative about marketing to the new men. Cosmetics companies are recognizing this today.

The press is afraid of the change in masculinity. Writers are comfortable with societal norms. It is easier to write about the norms rather than explore new territory. The press attempts to appeal to the general populace because that can generate the most sales. Articles are often not written about facts without conforming to the societal norms.

It is difficult at best for people to accept change. It takes a lot of strength from each person to deal with and adjust to change. It will be very difficult for society to accept and adjust to the new understanding of masculinity as it develops.
