Metrosexual Misconceptions

Previous  Back  Next

A number of misconceptions have developed with regard to metrosexual men. These misconceptions tend to put a negative light on metrosexual men and to misrepresent them.

One misconception is that metrosexual men are most interested in themselves. This is like saying that because a woman takes a long time getting ready, her only interest is in herself. You see, men are taking longer to prepare themselves for going out because they are putting more effort into looking their best just as women do today.

One article said that it is alright for men to take time to look good but they should not take as long as women. This is totally false. Men should take as long as they feel they need to look their best. Women did not always take as much time grooming themselves as they have during the last century.

Another misconception is that metrosexual men are not as into their families. The belief is that these men put their families second to themselves. Once again this is totally untrue.

Metrosexual men are more into their families than any men before them. These men have allowed their emotions to be an important part of their lives. There is nothing more familiy oriented than emotions. These are men that allow themselves to be closer to their wives and children than most men in history.

These men understand their wives. The men also want to look good for their wives. They take the time to look and feel their best. They also understand shopping because looking good requires going to the store to find the best outfit.

A third misconception is that it is not masculine to be a metrosexual. A number of men are holding on to the macho definition of masculinity and find metrosexual men to be a threat.

In fact, many of the men that claim to be macho have developed metrosexual tendencies. Metrosexual men are just as masculine as macho men, but they have a great advantage over macho men. They are in touch with their inner self. Macho men by definition cannot be in touch with their inner self. The Houghton Mifflin dictionary defines machismo as follows:

A strong or exaggerated sense of masculinity stressing attributes such as physical courage, virility, domination of women, and aggressiveness.

While males tend to be dominate and aggressive, the societal norm for macho men is not in keeping with the natural man. As men let go of the societal design of men and accept themselves as they are, they become more gentle, emotional and concerned with more than just themselves.

The end result is that the metrosexual man is not more self obsorbed, but actually more concerned with his family and his inner self. Both of these concerns help the metrosexual man to become a stronger and better man.
