Bristol bravery (well for me anyway!) 04-20-2005 8:39 PM

Thought I’d let you all know about my bravery! I stayed in Bristol 3 weeks ago for 4 nights, and of course took the obligatory 4 pairs of heels with me for a little late night heeling. Anyway – I’m not a huge street heeler, a little totter by the house when drunk or 30 seconds out when in a different city; this time I thought I’d put a little more effort in both with wearing shoes out and trying on/ buying in shops (the main aim of which was to try on: High Heeled Boots

Right the more important bit SHOPPING in Bristol and Bath

I asked in “Faith” in Broadmead if they had the above boots in a nine – they lady said “No sorry you’ll have to use the website” Awwww No! I wanted to be all brave and try them on, well that’s what I thought as I walked out the door!

Debenhams “Faith” same response, but it was busy so I’m kind of glad Debenhams own section a little quieter so I tried on a pair of courts, girl was a little shocked at me asking for them for me – but no issues. Shoes were too expensive the wife would of killed me!

Stepping Out loads of cheaper shoes / boots (tiny shop) plucked up the courage and asked about a pair of 8 boots, guy didn’t seem phased, lady brought them out and informed me that I could walk better in them than many of the ladies who buy them! Instant sale!

Mastershoe – Big shop mostly safety type footwear but they did have a selection of newrock boots including the high heeled ones; tried them on in the shop. The guys in the shop were totally uninterested, went to the counter the lady said “no returns, have these been tried on?” I replied “Yes I have and they’re fine” she replied “Cool” (in a postive kind of way!) Another Sale!

Barratts – Ended up finding little in Broadmead, but went to Cribbs causeway and found a pair of Sz 9 courts for a steal, slipped one on in the busy shop, younger assistant spotted me and looked stunned – I was embarrassed and scampered! Came back later to buy them and a 30yr old lady dealt with me. I said, “I’d like these please” she said without even a thought “OK sir, would you like to try these on?” The shop was packed and full of kids, so I just squeaked “Love to, too many people”, the woman chucked and said “No problem sir”, got me the shoes and then tries to sell me the jelly insoles for them so my feet wouldn’t hurt! Really nice attitude – Another sale!

Lots of other shoe shops in the two places I went all were good – just nothing caught my eye.

Dune – Bath

Same kind of shops etc. main bit for this one was Dune. Lovely pair of boots and I asked the assistant if she had them in an 8, went to look upstairs, through the men’s section and I followed her. Got up there and it was empty. She passed them to me and I asked would she mind if I tried them on, reply “Of course sir, would you like me to get you some pop-socks?” How cool was that! Anyway they were a little too small (alas) she just pipes up “shame - what kind of thing were you after heel type or height, we’ve got some great kitten heels in at the moment!” “Er- height really” “OK, stay there” off she went, 2 more pairs of boots later!!! Just soo chuffed! The best service, the coolest staff - couldn’t recommend it enough (mind you I expect it would be different in the guys section had people in! Feel really bad, didn’t buy any of them (they’re all really expensive!) anyway going back to Bristol soon, so I’ll splash the cash in Dune then!

Oh and as for street heeling, once the sun had set, I tottered every night for about 20 – 60 minutes. Most nights boots well hidden by very long trousers (I’m 6’4”, trousers with a 40” leg from High and Mighty!). The other nights, I had an old pair of tight jeans from my metal days. Put them on, put my 4” knee high spiky boots on over them – fully on show, Goth T-shirt and black coat, Goth make-up and off I went. I got less looks with the boots on show than I did whilst I was hiding them – I don’t even like Goth music!
