I've worn a home-made skirt for some years now while working around the house. I dissipate a lot of heat while DIYing and I find that a skirt is cooler and offers greater freedom of movement than shorts. I only wore it when I was alone in the house.

One day I put on one of my wife's skirts and wandered into the kitchen just to get her reaction. I was surprised when all she said was "Very nice" and carried on with what she was doing. Some weeks later I found a long black skirt in a bag due to go to the charity shop. I put the skirt on (it fitted ). Again, I wore it whenever I was alone in the house. One day I put it on and waited for her to come home... It took her several minutes to notice. Again, very little reaction when she eventually realised what I was wearing; I felt it necessary to explain where I'd got the skirt from, which was OK with her. I had 'come out', at least as far as my nearest and dearest was concerned and now felt free to wear a skirt in her presence (a great feeling). I might add that she wears trousers 99.9% of the time and we have many good-natured arguments about who's the man in the house. I've always maintained that equality works both ways; if she can wear trousers then I can wear a skirt.

Skirting shifted up a gear when we went on a cruise in the Mediterranean. Three things came together which really switched me on to MUGs:

1. The sun was very strong. I wore shorts and ended up with beetroot coloured legs. And I wasn't going to wear long trousers just to keep the sun off (too hot). I did end up with quite a nicely tanned legs - all gone now.

2. We were talking to another couple and the conversation got around to some guy who'd had his vasectomy reversed (heaven knows how we got on to that subject). The husband of the couple said he thought he'd seen this guy wearing a skirt, and by his tone he obviously thought this was rather odd behaviour for a man. I thought it was rather a good idea (wish I'd been into skirting when the wife had me done 20 years ago )

3. We called in at Mahon (capital of Menorca). On the quayside there were a number of market stalls. One was selling sarongs and I was attracted to a particularly colourful one which I purchased, thinking I could give it to my daughter. I tried it on in our cabin... my daughter still hasn't received that sarong . It was the last day of the holiday so I didn't wear the sarong in public (I hadn't at that time discovered the confidence-boosting qualities of Tom's beverages[Tom's Cafe]).

When we came home I bought some material and made myself a sarong, figuring that as sarongs are worn by men in various parts of the world and, as I'd made it myself, it was most definitely NOT a woman's garment. I've experimented and modified it; it is now a simple wrapover, closing over the right leg, held by velcro. When my daughter saw it for the first time her reaction was "So what?" when wife tried to make light-hearted fun of my 'skirt'.

It's got a bit tatty so I just wear it around the house and garden as a 'utilisarong'. I wore it at Christmas when daughter and boyfriend came to visit. He's very fashion conscious and was heard to say "What ARE you wearing?" in a quizzical tone. I told him it was more comfortable than trousers. Next time I saw him, I was wearing a real Indonesian sarong and, apart from a few wolf whistles from him and my daughter, no reaction. I like to think I may have struck a small blow for the cause with him.

So far, outside skirting has been limited to wearing sarongs in the garden. The neighbours have either got used to me, or written me off as a head case; but who cares? Come the summer on a hot afternoon I intend to wear a sarong down town. Other men will be in shorts - I hope they envy me keeping cool.
