Polished Nails on the Train 02-25-2004 08:04 AM

During my commute to work on the train a large man sat next to me. When I say large, I mean that he had a large build and not that he was overweight.
He looked over at my hands in my lap and he said, “Where do you get your nails done?”
I was at first startled. You see, strangers do not ordinarily speak on the train into New York City and I had not expected a conversation to start. I told him that I got my nails done at various places around the City (New York City). I had my nails polished in clear polish, which is how I normally maintain them.
He told me that he used to get his nails done all the time at a place in the City.
Our conversation ended there, but I learned a great deal from it. I had never imagined that a large man would get his nails polished. I realized that I should not feel uncomfortable when asked about my nails. I can enjoy my polished nails without believing that others are judging me negatively for doing so.
