Handbag or Purse 02-25-2004 08:04 AM

I have carried a man’s bag for fifteen years now. I started with a clutch or a bag that only has a small strap that wraps around your hand. I found that I often put my bag under my shoulder in order to free my hand.
Many of my acquaintances asked me if I was carrying a purse. At first I told them, “No, I am carrying a man’s bag.”
I went to a leather store and asked about the men’s bags there and the lady behind the counter said that they were called Euro Bags, but only because men were afraid of carrying a purse. She was so right. The fear of carrying something associated with femininity, while ridiculous, is very powerful.
After years of being asked this question and many people saying it was a purse, I change my story. I said, “I am carrying a man’s bag, purse or whatever you want to call it, but I love having empty pockets.”
That gave some of the men that do not like full pockets something to think about. Unfortunately for them, thinking is all they did. I resisted getting a cell phone for years, but I finally gave in and put it in my bag. When people asked me why I carried a purse, I told them that I did not like carrying anything in my pockets and I carry my cell phone in my purse.
I was afraid for years to get a bag with a shoulder strap. I thought that people would judge me negatively for carrying such a bag or purse. I saw a purse with a strap that I really liked and I could no longer resist.
What was amazing to me is that no additional comments have come from my carrying a purse with a strap rather than a clutch. My fear was all in my head!
