Here's another 'nothing happened' skirting event

I attended an Open University tutorial in Exeter on Saturday. This was to be my first major outing in a MUG without the support of my wife, and I spent a good part of Friday night rehearsing slick replies to imaginary adverse comments - I'd have done better getting some sleep!

I wore a sarong because that's the only MUG I have at present (I'm hoping to get a Utilikilt before we go away on holiday in September). Its 65 miles to Exeter and wearing a sarong made it the most comfortable car journey I've ever done. I parked in the Park and Ride car park and took the train rather than the bus. The station at the other end is opposite the college, so I only had a road to cross. I'd have had to walk right through the centre of Exeter if I'd taken the bus. So far, so good, just the inevitable curious looks and comments between groups of friends.

In the tutorial room, all the other students (three men, two women) were wearing jeans. It was a hot day and I wondered how they could possibly wear such uncomfortable garments. The tutor (female) and myself were the only ones wearing unbifurcated garments. There were some double-takes when I walked in and nothing more.

The trouble with a sarong is that if the wind blows the wrong way, you can show a lot of leg. Great if you are female with shapely pins. I did precisely that while walking up the railway station platform past a group of young people. You could feel, rather than hear the amusement (I'd have done the same if I'd seen a middle-aged man showing a nice bit of thigh ) Thankfully there were no bawdy comments. The only people that spoke to me were a group of teenage girls who asked if I had a cigarette lighter (Sorry luv, I don't smoke).

Back to the car and a comfortable drive home. While walking back to the car, I met two guys coming towards me. One appeared to be wearing a miniskirt. As they passed one said something about a man in a skirt. I turned to check the guy in what I thought was a skirt. There was definitely no inseam. Had I just seen my first man in a skirt? Hope so.

A good, comfortable day out, what was I worrying about?

Charlie
